Happy Birthday Chiropractic!

In late September of 1895, D.D. Palmer was standing in his office looking down on his table and at the back of a friend and young man who was seeking his help. D.D. had grown a successful practice in the Midwest through magnetic healing of people with severely diseased organs and horrible prognoses. This time he was up against something he hadn’t seen before. His friend, Harvey Lillard, a janitor that worked in the same building as D.D. Palmer in Davenport, had lost his hearing after an injury to his spine when he was bending over.

D.D. postulated that if there was an injury to the spine that produced nerve pressure on nerves going to organs and muscles throughout the body, if the pressure was removed, the nerves should restore function through the body. As he looked at the spine of his friend, he had a confidence to make a correction and restore the life force back to Harvey. When the adjustment was made the body was given the opportunity to rest and heal. Within a couple of short weeks, Harvey reported that his hearing was restored. This was the first adjustment.

An adjustment is a specific force provided by a doctor of chiropractic to an area of functional disturbance (subluxation) in order for the body to become more balanced and for health to flow out of the body. We were created by design to have healing within our bodies and those healing abilities will not fully function when a person is subluxated. When the body is free and the connection between the master system (the brain and spinal cord) and the body (organs, glands, muscles, etc.) is 100% clear, this is where healing begins.

I hope that most of you remember your first adjustment. I do not remember mine. I do not have a clear, vivid picture of what I was thinking, feeling or expressing at that moment. I do know that the moment I was first adjusted, my body was given a chance to begin a healing journey. I continue that journey to this day. My goal is to allow the best in me to pour out every day and serve you all to the greatest of my abilities. Thank you for trusting us and allowing us to celebrate and provide chiropractic care for you in this wonderful community that we call home.

God bless!
